AgriSkills together with Päpstliche Missionswerke in Austria funded by the Austrian Development Agency took on a 3 year project to teach and encourage conservation farming in South Africa using the principals of Permaculture.
As pilot project they used a community at Phake Thabeng in the Nkangala District Municipality in Mpumalanga. The infrastructure, fences, pumps and electricity, dam and irrigation system were all erected for the community on a piece of land granted for the project.
Those who felt that they could benefit from the training came to the garden to work there and get instruction. They then went to their respective gardens where they could implement the concepts taught at the garden. They were given instruction on how to run a cooperative and work together as a community.
Mabothe Secondary School took part in the project and started a garden at the school. They have also learnt how to farm earth worms to make a compost and “tea” for fertilising gardens.
